What Affects Stump Grinding Cost in Huntsville
Stump work is the easiest line item to under-specify, which is exactly why bids come back so different.

- Licensed & insured contractors
- Free, no-obligation quotes
- Local Madison County crews
- 24/7 storm response
We don't publish prices. Huntsville Tree Service Pros is a referral
service — we don't perform the work, and we haven't seen your property. A published
range would mislead you and unfairly anchor the contractor who quotes the job. What we can
do is show you exactly what a contractor is pricing, so you can read a bid properly.
Why we won't quote you a number
Depth, root spread, access, and what happens to the grindings all change the job. We don't publish stump pricing - we'd rather tell you how to make the bids comparable so you can judge them yourself.
What a contractor is actually pricing
| Factor | Why it moves the number |
|---|---|
| Diameter at ground level | Not the height of the old tree. Most crews price on the stump's width where it meets the soil. |
| Root flare spread | Large surface roots radiating outward mean considerably more grinding than the stump alone suggests. |
| Grinder access | A machine that fits through a standard gate deploys easily. One that needs fence panels removed does not. |
| Grinding depth | Enough for sod is one job. Deep enough to replant a tree in the same spot, with chips removed, is another. |
| Rock and debris | Grinding near gravel, old concrete, or fill wears teeth fast. |
| Number of stumps | Mobilisation is a fixed cost, so additional stumps on the same visit are always cheaper per stump. Always ask. |
| Chip disposal | Backfilled into the hole, or hauled off - decide which you want. |
How to compare bids fairly
- Get the depth in writing. "Ground the stump" and "ground ten inches below grade" are different jobs at different prices.
- Confirm who fills the hole and whether grindings stay or go.
- If you have several stumps and nobody offers a package, call someone else.
- Have utilities marked by calling 811 first. It's free and it's required.
Questions to ask every contractor
- How deep will you grind, measured below grade?
- Do the grindings stay in the hole or get hauled away?
- Will you grind the surface roots as well as the stump?
- Do you discount additional stumps on the same visit?
- Have utilities been marked?

Stump Grinding Pricing Questions
Why don't you list stump grinding prices?
We're a referral service and don't perform the work. Stump pricing also depends heavily on depth and root spread, which nobody can judge from a website. We'd rather help you get bids that actually cover the same job.
Is grinding cheaper than full stump removal?
Considerably. Grinding chews the stump below grade and leaves your yard largely intact. Full extraction pulls the root ball out, leaves a crater, and costs several times more. Grinding is what almost everyone actually needs.
Will a ground stump grow back?
No. Once the stump and root flare are ground out, the remaining roots can't produce leaves and they decay in place over a few years.
Can I plant grass over it?
Yes, with a standard grind of six to twelve inches below grade. If you want to plant a new tree in the same spot, ask for a deeper grind and full chip removal.
