How to choose a tree company in Alabama

• Alabama licenses this trade — so check. Tree surgery is covered by a Horticulture Professional Services license issued by the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries. A company must hold it to operate or advertise in Alabama, it requires passing a written exam, and it is renewed annually. Most homeowners have no idea it exists, which is precisely why it is worth asking for — and worth verifying with the Department rather than taking on trust.
• Be especially careful with a crew that arrived after the storm. North Alabama sits in a severe-storm corridor, and widespread damage draws out-of-area trucks. Some are excellent. Some are not licensed here at all. The license, the insurance and a local address are what separate them, and all three can be checked before anyone climbs.
• Ask for certificates of insurance from the insurer, not a photo on a phone — both general liability and workers' compensation. Certificates are trivially faked, and the workers' comp piece is the one that becomes your problem if someone is hurt in your yard.
• ISA Certified Arborist is a credential, not a license. It is real and verifiable through the ISA's public directory, and it tells you someone has been examined on the work. It is not a substitute for the state license or for insurance. You want all three.
• Get identical scope in writing from every bidder: which trees, exactly what is cut or removed, stump or no stump and to what depth, debris hauled or left, who fills and seeds the hole, and the cleanup standard. Most wild quote spreads are different jobs, not different greed.
• If a company offers to "top" your tree, call someone else. Topping strips a tree's ability to feed itself and opens large wounds to decay. Reputable arborists refuse to do it, so being offered it tells you what you are dealing with.
• Never pay a large cash deposit up front, particularly to someone who knocked on your door. Legitimate local companies rarely need your money before they have your tree.
• Two quotes minimum, three on a large removal — on identical scope, or you are comparing nothing.
