Why gutters matter to your trees and your foundation

• An overflowing gutter dumps concentrated water at the foundation, saturating soil right where you least want it.
• Repeated saturation and drying cycles move clay soils, and North Alabama has plenty of clay.
• That same saturated zone is where shallow tree roots concentrate, which is how root and foundation problems end up tangled together.

The fall checklist

• Clear gutters after the bulk of leaf drop, generally late November here.
• Extend downspouts at least four to six feet from the foundation.
• Walk the drip line of every large tree and look for heaving, cracking, or soft ground.
• Note any limb that has grown over the roof since spring. That is your winter pruning list.

Fall is also the best planting window

• October through early December is the ideal time to plant trees in North Alabama. Roots establish through the mild winter before summer heat arrives.
• Plant at the right depth. The root flare should be visible at the soil surface, not buried. Planting too deep is the single most common reason young landscape trees fail.
• Choose better species than the last generation did. Willow oak, nuttall oak, blackgum, and American hornbeam all outperform Bradford pear and water oak here.
