Bradford Pears: Why They Split, and What to Do

The structural flaw

• Multiple stems leave the trunk at nearly the same point and at very narrow angles.
• Bark gets pinched between those stems instead of wood growing across the union. That is called included bark, and it means there is nothing structural holding the union together.
• The tree grows fast and heavy on top of that weak point.
• Around 15 to 20 years, the load exceeds what the union can hold and half the tree comes off - usually in a storm, occasionally on a still day.

Why Madison County has so many

• They were planted en masse in subdivisions from the 1980s onward - fast growing, cheap, uniform, and spectacular in bloom.
• Huntsville and Madison's rapid growth means large numbers of them were planted in the same few years, so they reach failure age in the same few years.
• They also escaped cultivation and now grow wild along fence lines and road edges across the region.

Your options

• Structural pruning early. On a young tree, reducing competing leaders genuinely helps. On a mature one it is largely too late.
• Cabling. Can extend life on a specimen you want to keep, but it is ongoing maintenance and does not fix the underlying defect.
• Removal and replacement. The honest answer for a mature Bradford pear within reach of the house or driveway. Removal is usually inexpensive because the wood is light and they are rarely huge.
• Replace with: serviceberry, redbud, American hornbeam, or blackgum for similar size and better structure.
